---------Stars Pay Tribute to Pollack
George Clooney has led the tributes to his Michael Clayton co-star Sydney Pollack, branding the actor/director a "class act." Pollack died aged 73 on Monday, after a nine-month battle with cancer at his home in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles. The Oscar-winning star recently directed and starred alongside Clooney in 2007's Michael Clayton. Clooney says, "Sydney made the world little better, movies a little better and even dinner a little better. A tip of the hat to a class act. He'll be missed terribly."
And actress Sally Field - who starred in Pollack's 1981 movie Absence of Malice - has also paid tribute to the star. She says, "Having the opportunity to know Sydney and work with him was a great gift in my life. He was a good friend and a phenomenal director and I will cherish every moment that I ever spent with him." Pollack won two Academy Awards for the 1985 movie Out Of Africa - Best Picture and Best Director.
------------Clooney Stung By 'Leatherheads' Flop
George Clooney was hurt by the failure of his most recent movie Leatherheads - but is determined to learn from the experience. A month after its release, the American football movie has grossed $36 million; $22 million short of its $58 million budget. It only reached third place in the U.S. box office and disappointed critics - leaving director and star Clooney devastated. He tells Rolling Stone, "It bombed and when I say bombed, it bombed. Someone said, 'How does that feel?' and it stings a little bit. It's not like we just showed up: I was working on this for a couple years and put a lot of work into it, and you get knocked back a little bit."
But he refuses to be beaten, insisting, "The trick is how you handle things when things don't go great. It's easy when things are doing well: The people I most admire are the people who handle it when the studio says that's really underperformed and they say, ‘Ow that hurt.' I've been a fan of watching people go through cycles, not just winning cycles."
---------Caan Quits Movie after Fight with Director Russell
Actor James Caan has quit new comedy Nailed after an on-set bust-up with director David O. Russell. The star was hired to join the movie's South Carolina set for just two days to shoot his role as a U.S. politician who chokes to death on a cookie. But Caan walked off the set on day one, after an argument with Russell.
The director reportedly wanted Caan to cough and choke at the same time - but Caan refused, insisting he couldn't do both. According to Reuters, Russell offered to shoot the scene both ways - but Caan refused and quit. The movie's producer Douglas Wick insists the row was "part of an ongoing creative conversation between the actor and director." It's not the first time Russell has clashed with cast members. George Clooney reportedly punched him on the 1999 set of Three Kings, and Russell was captured on film involved in a screaming row with Lily Tomlin while shooting 2004's I Heart Huckabees.
